"California Compassionate Choices Act," Modeled on Oregon Law, Dies in Senate Committee

Final Exit Network was deeply disappointed by the news that the “California Compassionate Choices Act,” an attempt to pass a state law modeled after Oregon’s physician assisted suicide law, failed in committee.  Despite a recent national Gallup poll reporting sustained 69% support for a person’s right to choose, and despite a March California poll showing 70% support doctor-assisted suicide, the CA bill never made it to the floor of the Senate.  This is an unfortunate setback that may impact legislative initiatives nationwide.

Furthermore, and perhaps more significant for the future of similar California legislative initiatives, Governor Schwarzenegger threatened to veto this politically charged legislation, incredibly claiming that the issue should be addressed in a ballot initiative.  Right-to-die advocates have largely abandoned ballot initiatives in favor of legislative actions, because legislatures are capable of thoughtful deliberation, and they have the power to refine legislation to address the concerns of opponents during the process.  And, more importantly, legislatures are less likely to be swayed by last-minute hysteria and disinformation campaigns fostered by opponents.

As we have stated from the beginning, Final Exit Network believes the needs of those who are suffering are paramount.  We applaud the work of organizations that seek legislative action to strengthen our right to die a peaceful and painless death at the time and place of our choosing. We know our colleagues will keep trying, and we wish them success.   However, we feel that legislative change will not come soon enough for the many people who need help NOW and in the interim!  The California Senate Judiciary Committee’s refusal to pass this important legislation out of committee strengthens our resolve.  Until laws protect the right of every adult to a peaceful, dignified death, Final Exit Network will be there to support those who need relief from their suffering today!
